Lynn Avery Blankenship County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences P.O. Box 55 Edmonton, KY 42129
The Metcalfe County Extension Homemakers Association is one of the oldest, most recognized, local volunteer organizations in our community. Homemaker volunteers in Metcalfe County maintain the Edmonton town square garden that is across from Butler’s Funeral Home, maintain the gardens at Sulphur Well Park, are the volunteers that staff the Red Cross Blood Drives in our County, volunteer as Ombudsman’s visiting individuals who live in the Metcalfe County Skilled Care facility, voluntarily raise funds for ovarian cancer research programs at the University of Kentucky, volunteer at the Library, volunteer to read books to young children in local programs and participate in many other volunteer activities. There are currently 5 active Homemakers groups that meet once monthly to fellowship with each other, enjoy some good food and to participate in a monthly lesson, receiving research-based information on a wide range of topics. There are also a large number of members, who for various reasons can not commit to regular club membership, that are called Members at Large or Mailbox members. How much does it cost to be a member? Current county, area and state dues are $7.00 per year. A $1 contribution is included for the Kentucky Ovarian Cancer Research Fund - a KEHA health research project in cooperation with the UK Markey Cancer Center. Included in your membership are 10 annual, informative newsletters, which will be mailed to you. Homemaker members, age 50 and above or younger family cancer history, are eligible to receive free ovarian cancer screenings at the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, KY. Mail box members also receive the printed monthly leader lesson materials each month with their newsletter.
